Heathrow, a planned-unit community in Florida, is using fiber optics technology to build security into homes and offices.
Abstract
Built-in, versatile fiber-optics cable links all new homes and offices to an onsite alarm monitoring system. The cable transmits signals without tying up telephone lines, even though it is used for telephone signals, computer communication, and cable television. An integrated services digital network (ISDN) makes it possible to use the same cables. The ISDN system carries two voice or data channels and one signalling channel, as well as cable television, utility meter reading, and other channels. With the system, individuals who live and work in Heathrow will be able to check the security status of their residence from the office. A variety of password controls will prevent one individual's accessing data about another individual's home. In addition to this system, the community has a 17-member security force providing 24-hour patrol of residences and offices. The front gate to the community uses an access card control system, in combination with a security officer checkpoint. An integrated, central station, access control system is being installed that will enable the same card to be used for multiple facilities. An office building is open to the public during the day, but uses proximity readers and magnetic fail-safe locks to control access as specified by individual employers. Reports on who entered the building and when also can be generated. Photographs.
