Annotation

This chapter sets forth six issue areas that will continue to shape the future of juvenile corrections.

Abstract

The issues that will influence juvenile corrections are presented in terms of polarities that often characterize related policy debates. They are: (1) institutions versus community-based programs; (2) rehabilitation versus punishment; (3) rehabilitation: a meaningful goal or an albatross; (4) determinate versus indeterminate release; (5) victim versus offender; and (6) private versus public sector administration of programs. The chapter contends that there is more compatibility among these polarities than is usually recognized and that the future of juvenile corrections will depend in large part on how professionals and citizens are able to build off the strengths of the polarities toward a stronger integration, one free of unrealistic expectations that can undermine the most laudable and desirable policy. The chapter includes discussion questions based on the information presented. References
