FINAL REPORT ON A PROJECT TO PROVIDE INTENSIVE PROBATION SERVICES TO BURGLARY AND ROBBERY PROBATIONERS OVER A SIX-MONTH PERIOD.
Abstract
THE PROJECT WAS BASED ON THE HYPOTHESIS THAT BURGLARY AND ROBBERY PROBATIONERS WOULD RECIDIVATE LESS IF SIGNIFICANTLY MORE TIME WERE SPENT IN FACE-TO-FACE CONTACT WITH THEIR PROBATION OFFICERS. IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE PROJECT GOALS, TEN NEW PROBATION OFFICERS WERE HIRED, OVERTIME WAS AUTHORIZED FOR TEN OTHERS, AND THREE NEIGHBORHOOD OFFICES WERE SET UP FOR MORE CONVENIENT ACCESS. THE EVALUATION METHODOLOGY INVOLVED A STUDY OF RECIDIVISM, COMPARING RATES BETWEEN THREE EXPERIMENTAL GROUPS, TWO CONTROL GROUPS, AND A BASE RECIDIVISM RATE. RESULTS REVEALED THAT ALTHOUGH PROBATION SUPERVISION WAS INTENSIFIED, THERE WAS NO EFFECT ON RECIDIVISM NOTED IN THE FIRST TWO EXPERIMENTAL GROUPS. RESULTS ON THE THIRD GROUP APPEAR PROMISING ALTHOUGH THEY HAD NOT YET BEEN TABULATED.
