Abstract
Fathers, husbands, boyfriends, mothers, lovers, sisters, friends, and children are all faced with crisis and trauma when someone they love is sexually victimized. Recent and past victims of rape or attempted rape need help to recover from the damage sexual assault causes. Recovery requires courage, and some pain, depression, and anger are unavoidable. Some of this destruction can be lessened if victims and their families and friends recognize some symptoms as normal and deal with them. The book is not intended to be a substitute for counseling and support groups, but rather is intended to especially help victims who cannot afford counseling or are afraid to go to a counselor. The information is based on many years of experience with a rape crisis line, personal experience, and interviews with sexual assault experts and rape victims. The advice contained in the book focuses on the trauma of sexual assault, police and court handling of the crime, fear, finding pleasure again, and making safe choices. Notes for therapists and a list of suggested readings are included. An appendix provides additional information on sexually transmitted diseases, medical care, and reporting rape to the police.
