In this self-help guide for inmates and their families, the author shows inmates how to take responsibility for their own actions, repair their family relationship, and stay out of prison.
Abstract
Using simple language and examples that inmates can relate to, the author discusses some of the ways inmates can change and adopt a new lifestyle of settled living. The guide is intended to not only help inmates but also counselors, chaplains, and inmate family members. Relevant topics in the guide include why inmates return to prison, successful completion of the prison sentence, effects of prison on inmates, effects of prison on family members, and the importance of strengthening family relationships. Other topics focus on self-esteem, problem-solving skills, stresses of re-entry into family life and society, alcohol or drug dependency, anger control, the development of goals, the need for a commitment to change, employment rights and opportunities after prison, family violence, and the criminal mentality. Information is presented on how to deal with physical, emotional, and discipline needs and on how family members should prepare for the inmate's return home. 31 references
