This article introduces the reader to the world of forged paintings, a world the author says is virtually unknown to the public and even to criminology experts.
Abstract
Certain terms associated with the milieu of forged paintings are defined, and relevant legal issues are examined. Contrary to the theft of art objects, forgeries require intellectual and artistic scheming. In addition, legal and police procedures are lacking relative to persons who acquire, sell, or possess forged paintings. Terms used in the world of forged paintings include forgery, counterfeit, copy, reproduction, imitation, attribution, falsification, and replica. The importance of attribution is discussed, as well as the legality of copying other people's art. Consideration is also given to copyright and legal issues.
