This article describes the computer hardware characteristics and operations of Australia's forensic processing facility.
Abstract
Australia's image processing system improves the quality of police photographs and videotapes to enhance evidence analysis and presentation. The major components of the hardware configuration are image digitizers for photographic input, a CPU/array processor for image data computations, a framestore/monitor for the display of enhanced images, and an output device which produces a permanent record of the image. Two main types of image processing are conducted. These are spatial domain methods, which operate directly on the picture data, and fourier domain methods, which deal with complicated picture defects. The spatial domain methods achieve contrast enhancement, noise filtering, and edge enhancement. The fourier domain methods recover much of the original image information for an image that has complicated defects. This is accomplished through bandpass filtering, texture removal, and image deblurring. The system can be used to store, retrieve, and display on a graphics VDU any photograph which can be reduced to a black and white image and subsequently stored as data. 11 photographic illustrations, 1 reference, and 7-item bibliography.
