The social, economic, and political changes that have occurred in the European Economic Community during the past 2 years are examined, with emphasis on the potential growth of organized crime throughout Europe as a result of these changes.
Abstract
The forecasts were based on multiple controlled qualitative research methods. In addition, interviews were conducted with law enforcement officials in the United Kingdom, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg, as well as with European police officials studying in the United States and knowledgeable United States officials assigned to international crime. The analysis noted that much attention has focused on economic changes, but potential changes in criminality have received little attention. However, the emerging environment for economic growth and greater personal freedoms is also an environment that will be consumed by a wide range of organized crime groups. Further research focusing on specific groups and individuals in Europe, along with possible connections to the United States, is recommended. Notes and 26 references
