TWO NEW RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE DEVICES ARE BEING DEVELOPED TO GIVE POLICE INFORMATION ON HOW FAR A DRIVER CAN SEE AT ANY TIME, ESPECIALLY IN THE FOG.
Abstract
SINCE FOG-RELATED TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS ON MAJOR HIGHWAYS IN ENGLAND COST NEARLY ONE-HALF MILLION POUNDS A YEAR, THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT THE POLICE FUNCTION WILL BE BEST SERVED WITH ACCURATE INFORMATION ON VISIBILITY CONDITIONS IN THE FOG. TWO DEVICES, THE BACKGROUND LIGHT METER AND THE POINT VISIBILITY METER, ARE BEING DEVELPED TO INDICATE TO THE POLICE WHEN SPECIAL TRAFFIC CONTROL PROCEDURES SHOULD BEST BE UTILIZED. THE ABILITY OF THE INSTRUMENTS TO BE SUFFICIENTLY RELIABLE AND ACCURATE FOR POLICE USE, TO PREDICT THE ONSET OF A THICK FOG, AND TO MEASURE THE VISIBILITY IN A LARGE AREA FROM ONE POINT IS NOW BEING TESTED. THE RESULTS OF THIS TESTING SHOULD BE AVAILABLE IN 1975.
