This text is designed to provide students with an understanding of criminal justice at the State level and to provide a foundation for improving Florida's criminal justice system.
Abstract
The text contains 10 chapters, the first of which covers police development in Florida, the history of law enforcement, and contemporary policing. The next three chapters deal with crime, victims, and the criminal justice process; components of law enforcement, police consolidation, and the role of police; and the evolution of traditional and community policing models. Subsequent chapters examine prosecution and defense, courts and the judicial process, police training and education, the police academy, and police careers. The next chapter describes the correctional system, including pre-sentence investigations, punishment, sentencing, inmate programs, correctional costs, death row, executions, prison escapes, house confinement and electronic monitoring, boot camp, and parole. The final two chapters cover the juvenile justice system and police consolidation, productivity, and privatization. Tables and figures
