TABULATED RESULTS OF A 1973 SURVEY OF 10 FLORIDA COUNTIES DETERMINING PREDICTIVE VARIABLES OF DISRUPTIVE HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH.
Abstract
THE SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED IN ONE URBAN AND ONE RURAL HIGH SCHOOL IN EACH OF TEN COUNTIES. DISRUPTIVE YOUTH WERE DEFINED AS THOSE SUSPENDED OR EXPELLED FROM SCHOOL, AND CUMULATIVE HIGH SCHOOL FOLDERS WERE USED AS THE DATA SOURCE. OF THE 87 VARIABLES COLLECTED, 15 WERE FOUND TO BE PREDICTIVE. OF THESE, SEX, RACE, SIXTH GRADE TEST SCORES, MOST RECENT GRADE POINT AVERAGE, VERBAL APTITUDE AND PRESENCE OR ABSENCE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL REFERRALS, CONSIDERED IN COMBINATION, WERE MOST PREDICTIVE. IT WAS FOUND THAT OF THOSE SUSPENDED OR EXPELLED, A DISPROPORTIONATE NUMBER WERE BLACK. COMMON REASONS FOR SUSPENSION ARE LISTED, AND THE VALUE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELING IN PREVENTING SCHOOL DISRUPTIONS IS STATED. EXTENSIVE TABLES OF RESULTS ARE INCLUDED. APPENDED ARE LETTERS OF INTRODUCTION USED BY THE SURVEYORS, NAMES OF THE SURVEYORS AND MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNOR'S TASK FORCE, THE QUESTIONNAIRE, A PROSPECTUS, RESPONSES FROM STATES AND AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY.
