A COMPARISON BETWEEN IN-HOUSE AND EXTERNALLY CONTRACTED LAUNDRY SERVICES FOR 150 AND 400 MAN INSTITUTIONS.
Abstract
THE COMMERCIAL LAUNDRY SERVICES FOR 150-MAN INSTITUTIONS INCLUDE ONE WASHER AND DRYER FOR EACH 16-MAN COTTAGE, WITH LINENS AND TOWELS BEING SENT OUT SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK. FOR 400-MAN INSTITUTIONS, THIS INCLUDED TWO FULLY EQUIPPED LAUNDROMATS WITH LINENS AND TOWELS SENT OUT. FOR BOTH SIZES OF INSTITUTIONS, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE COMMERCIAL SERVICES WERE LESS EXPENSIVE THAN THE IN-HOUSE METHOD. AN ANCILLARY BENEFIT IS THAT DESIRABLE LIVING HABITS MIGHT BE DEVELOPED BY THE PRISONERS WASHING THEIR PERSONAL CLOTHING.
