Abstract
During the reporting period, there was an average of 39,700 inmates in the State's county detention facilities. Seventy-three percent of inmates were incarcerated for felony offenses and nearly 21 percent for misdemeanors. Juveniles accounted for 2.7 percent of the overall inmate population; almost 97 percent were charged with felonies and 96 percent were male. In March 1995, the State's county detention incarceration rate was 2.9 per 1,000 county residents. During that month, 11 of 105 facilities had average daily inmate populations exceeding their Department of Corrections rated capacity. During the reporting period, 22,637 inmates housed in county detention facilities were awaiting trial. 4 tables
