PROBATION OFFICERS APPROACH THEIR DUAL TASK OF REHABILITATION OF THE OFFENDER AND PROTECTION OF SOCIETY WITH DIFFERENT 'FACES' - STRATEGIES OR STYLES WHICH REFLECT THE RELATIVE WEIGHTING OF THESE TWO GOALS.
Abstract
EACH OF THESE STYLES DETERMINES THE INTERACTION WHICH LEADS TO FIVE DIFFERENTIAL OUTCOMES IN PROBATION OFFICER-PROBATIONER RELATIONSHIPS. THE AUTHOR EMPLOYS A PROBATION GRID ON WHICH POSITION IS DETERMINED BY DEGREE OF EMPHASIS ON EACH OF THE GOALS. IMPLICATIONS OF EACH OF THE FIVE GRID POSITIONS ARE DISCUSSED FOR BOTH PROBATION OFFICER AND PROBATIONER.
