PRESENTS FIVE AREAS CONSIDERED TO PRESENT THE GREATEST CHALLENGES TO PSYCHOLOGISTS IN THEIR EFFORTS TO DEAL THERAPEUTICALLY WITH THE PROBLEMS OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR.
Abstract
THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTEGRATED THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK IN THE MIDST OF THE MULTIPLICITY AND OFTEN APPARENTLY CONTRADICTORY THEORIES OF DEVIANT BEHAVIOR IS DEEMED A NECESSARY STEP FOR ERECTING COORDINATED PROGRAMS OF BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION IN THE CORRECTIONAL FIELD. A SECOND CHALLENGE IS CONSIDERED TO LIE IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF PERSONALITY AND BEHAVIORAL CLASSIFICATIONS THAT ARE DEMONSTRABLY RELATED TO SPECIFIC TREATMENT ALTERNATIVES. A THIRD CHALLENGE IS POSED IN THE FORMULATION OF NEW TREATMENT STRATEGIES WHOSE EFFECTIVENESS CAN BE TESTED. THE DEVELOPMENT, IN EVERY SOCIAL AGENCY RESPONSIBLE FOR CRIME AND DELINQUENCY, OF PROGRAMS ADEQUATE INFORMATION BASES TO PERMIT MONITORING OF PROGRAM EFFECTIVENESS IS PRESENTED AS A FOURTH CHALLENGE. THE DEVISING OF EFFECTIVE MEANS FOR RESEARCH UTILIZATION IS DISCUSSED AS THE FIFTH CHALLENGE.
