This report explores alternative ways in which Ambler Borough (Pennsylvania) might provide police protection within the constraints of current budgetary restrictions.
Abstract
A team of public management and police specialists interviewed Borough and police personnel, observed operations by riding with police personnel, and collected data on Borough finances and departmental operations. The report analyzes costs for police protection and compares them with surrounding communities. An overview of police operations considers personnel and workload trends for 198085, investigations and arrests, and calls for service. The review concludes that modifications can be made to allow the police department to operate with fewer personnel and at a lower cost to the community. If these modifications are not adopted, the Borough will have to increase taxes or contract with a neighboring agency for police services. Specific staffing changes are outlined. Tables.
