This report is the first interim analysis concerning the effectiveness of the CDUI Project's educational counseling programs for multiple offender DUI's.
Abstract
The State Senate Bill 38 (SB 38) research design had four treatment groups, two forms of group counseling (Skills Workshop and Educational Eclectic Therapy) provided with or without chemotherapy (Disulfiram). The post-conviction presentence (PCPS) research design, used for clients with only one prior DUI conviction, has a no-treatment Control group and a minimum exposure, Biweekly Contacts Only group in addition to the four Counseling/Chemotherapy groups provided in the SB 38 design. Treatment effectiveness was assessed in terms of recorded accidents, DUI offenses, and total moving violations occurring subsequent to random assignment. Survival analysis was used to compare these traffic safety criteria between treatment groups. The results of the SB 38 design analyses suggested that chemotherapy used in conjunction with group counseling reduces the likelihood of rearrest for DUI relative to group counseling provided without chemotherapy. While this effect was pronounced for Educational Eclectic Therapy clients, there was no statistically significant difference in the DUI survival experience of Skills Workshop clients with or without chemotherapy. Analysis of the PCPS research design showed no statistically significant differences in driving behavior between clients assigned to counseling programs and clients assigned to Control or Biweekly Contacts Only conditions. The preliminary nature of these results was stressed. (NTIS abstract)
