This press release and report present findings of a survey of drug use among California public school students in grades 7, 9, and 11 during the 1993-94 school year; results revealed that drug use, particularly marijuana use, is no longer declining as in previous years and is now increasing.
Abstract
The survey polled 5,655 students. Findings revealed that 11.1 percent of the 7th graders had used marijuana in the last 6 months, an increase of 3.4 percent from 1991-92. Weekly marijuana use involved 10 percent of 9th graders and 14.5 percent of students in 11th grade. A total of 53.1 percent of the 7th graders, 68.6 percent of the 9th graders, and 74.3 percent of the 11th graders reported using alcohol in the last 6 months. Findings also indicated a decline in the exposure of students to prevention programs and in the percentage of students perceiving as harmful a drug such as marijuana. Figures and tables
