Annotation

This report used data from the National Crime Survey (NCS) to examine aspects related to female victims of violent crime.

Abstract

Two aspects are analyzed: violence against women perpetrated by intimates (including family members, ex-spouse, boyfriend, and ex-boyfriend) and rape. The results showed that women were victims of violent intimates at a rate three times that of men. This report analyzed the types of violent crimes committed by intimates and the rate of crime reporting by victims. The characteristics of women victimized by intimates analyzed here include race, ethnicity, age, marital status, family income, and employment status. The characteristics of the violence include use of weapons, injury, site of medical care, and use of self-protective measures. In the section on rape, this analysis focuses on the characteristics of the rape including time and location, characteristics of the victims, reporting to police, and characteristics of the offenders. There is also a comparison of rape by strangers and nonstrangers. 32 tables and 1 appendix
