This report profiles female offenders under the supervision of the New York State Department of Correctional Services for the years 1995 and 1996.
Abstract
Descriptive statistics are presented for female offenders based on three cohorts of data: inmates in custody, inmates admitted, and inmates released. Statistics are presented for both male and female inmates for comparison purposes. The Department had a total of 66,484 inmates in custody at the end of December 1995. Female offenders accounted for approximately 5 percent (n=3,616) of this population. In 1996 the Department had 69,684 inmates in custody. Female offenders again accounted for approximately 5 percent (n=3,740) of all inmates in custody. Other data and information on inmates in custody for these years addresses region of the State from which inmates came, age, race/ethnicity, religion, occupation, marital status, parenthood, academic education, and vocational education. Information is also provided on substance use, classification, security level and location, offenses, sentences, criminal history, recidivism, escapes, and temporary release participants. Information on admissions encompasses admission type, socio-demographics, and crime characteristics. Data on releases cover release type and time served. 15 tables
