THESE STATISTICAL TABLES, CHARTS, AND RELATED NARRATIVES REGARDING FEMALE OFFENDERS ARE GROUPED ACCORDING TO CANADIAN POLICE STATISTICS, COURT STATISTICS AND CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION STATISTICS.
Abstract
A LARGE PORTION OF THE DATA CONTAINED IN THE TABLES IS PRESENTED IN TERMS OF ABSOLUTE NUMBERS AS THE RELATIVELY SMALL NUMBER OF FEMALE OFFENDERS (COMPARED TO MALE OFFENDERS) HAVE PRECLUDED THE DEVELOPMENT OF A DATA BASE EXTENSIVE ENOUGH TO IDENTIFY ISSUES AND TRENDS IN FEMALE CRIMININALITY. WHILE DATA INCOMPATABILITIES IN TERMS OF REPORTING PROCEDURES, SCOPE OF COVERAGE, UNITS OF COUNT, AND DEFINITIONS PREVENT COMPARISONS BETWEEN THE STATISTICAL SYSTEMS, SELECTED COMPARISONS ARE MADE WITH STATISTICS COMPILED ON MALE OFFENDERS. STATISTICS RELATING TO THE INCIDENCE OF FEMALE CRIME PORTRAY THE NUMBER OF PERSONS CHARGED BY THE POLICE DURING 1970-74, FEMALE CRIME IN THE SEVENTIES, THE CHANGES IN NUMBERS OF ADULTS CHARGED FOR SPECIFIC OFFENSES FROM 1964 TO 1974, AND THE RATES OF CRIME IN THE PROVINCES FOR 1964, 1968, AND 1972. STATISTICS CONCERNING THE JUDICIAL RESPONSE TO INDICTABLE OFFENSE CONVICTIONS SHOW CHARGES AND CONVICTIONS (1968-72), SENTENCING PATTERNS FOR THE SAME TIME PERIOD, AND THE AGES OF FEMALES CONVICTED OF INDICTABLE OFFENSES FOR 1968-72. FINALLY, STATISTICS HAVING TO DO WITH THE FEDERAL FEMALE INMATE DEPICT THE OFFENSE AND THE SENTENCE, PREVIOUS INSTITUTIONAL EXPERIENCE OF OFFENDERS ADMITTED TO THE PRISON FOR WOMEN DURING THE PERIOD 1969-73 FOR SPECIFIC OFFENSES, AND FEMALES RELEASED FROM THE PENITENTIARY ACCORDING TO THE TYPES OF RELEASE AND THE LENGTH OF TIME SERVED. GRAPHS, TABLES, AND CHARTS COMPRISE THE BULK OF THE VOLUME.
