This is a descriptive overview of findings from the New York City Department of Health's study of Medical Examiner records, which details the circumstances of all homicides of adult females in New York City from 1990 through 1994.
Abstract
For each of the 1,159 homicide victims, the study reviewed autopsy, toxicological, serological, ballistics, crime-scene, crime follow-up, police, and medical examiner investigative reports, as well as witness interviews and various court documents. This summary provides information on the demographics of the victims and perpetrators as well as the circumstances of each homicide, including motive, modality and brutality, drug involvement, geography, victim relationship to perpetrator, and perpetrator suicide. The second section of the report focuses on intimate partner and family homicides that involved female victims. In addition to providing information on perpetrator- victim relationships in such homicides, the report provides data on race, age, homicide methods, brutality, homicide location by motive, household composition, homicide-suicide, others killed or injured, family members killed or injured, and the involvement of drugs and alcohol.
