Using a computer model that simulates the sentencing and release practices of Tennessee, this report projects the State's felony inmate population and includes those sentenced to local or Department of Correction facilities.
Abstract
Future inmate populations depend in large extent upon the number of drug commitments; increased cocaine commitments, particularly in Shelby County, are increasing the prison population. Furthermore, longer cocaine sentences are causing the population to expand. Serious Class A and Class B felons are remaining in the prison population and adding to the population growth. While planned correctional capacity should meet the demand until June 1992, there will be a shortage of prison beds beyond that date even with constant commitments. 2 tables and 6 figures
