Abstract
PART I OFFERS AN EXPLANATION OF TABLES WHICH APPEAR IN PARTS II AND III DESCRIBING DEFENDANTS DISPOSED OF IN THE 89 UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURTS AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. IT ALSO DESCRIBES THE VARIOUS SENTENCING PROCEDURES, THE STATISTICAL MEASUREMENTS AND THE METHOD OF COUNTING DEFENDANTS FOR INCLUSION IN THE FEDERAL OFFENDERS STATISTICS. A NEW CHART ILLUSTRATING THE VARIOUS SENTENCING ALTERNATIVES AVAILABLE TO THE COURTS IN FISCAL YEAR 1971 ACCOMPANIES THE DISCUSSION ON SENTENCING PROCEDURES. PART II CONTAINS STATISTICAL TABLES DESCRIBING CHARACTERISTICS OF PERSONS CHARGED WITH FEDERAL CRIMINAL VIOLATIONS IN THE 89 UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURTS. DEFENDANTS DISPOSED OF IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA ARE SHOWN IN PART III. ADDITIONAL STATISTICAL TABLES APPEAR IN PART IV OF THIS REPORT, WHICH SERVES AS AN APPENDIX.
