CONCLUDED THAT CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION IS TECHNICALLY FEASIBLE AND COST EFFECTIVE FOR TRAFFIC SURVEILLANCE ON THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY BRIDGE.
Abstract
A CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION SYSTEM WAS TESTED ON THE SAN FRANCISCO-OAKLAND BAY BRIDGE. FOUR TELEVISION CAMERAS WERE INSTALLED ON THE UPPER DECK OF THE WEST BAY SUSPENSION SPANS TO MONITOR TRAFFIC ON TWO MILES OF ROADWAY IN ORDER TO DETECT AND DISPATCH HELP TO TRAFFIC INCIDENTS. THE PILOT INSTALLATION WAS JUDGED TO BE EFFECTIVE IN QUICKENING THE DETECTION AND REMOVAL OF DISABLED VEHICLES, AS WELL AS BEING ECONOMICALLY AND TECHNICALLY FEASIBLE. IT WAS RECOMMENDED THAT ITS USE NOT BE EXPANDED TO THE ENTIRE BRIDGE PENDING ANALYSIS OF TOTAL TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT NEEDS ON THE BRIDGE. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
