Annotation

This paper describes a program in Antwerp, Belgium, that is designed to prevent fan violence at soccer games as well as other delinquent behavior.

Abstract

A facility was built within the Antwerp soccer stadium to provide a meeting place for young supporters of the local team. The facility, known as "a home for supporters," is open at scheduled hours during the week and two hours before and after home games. The local team coach and players were guests at the facility opening on November 26, 1988. Team players are regular visitors at the "home." The youth who participate in the program are known as the Fan-Coaching Team. There is a board of directors that includes people from youth organizations and a steering group composed of youth specialists and police officers. The team has extended its activities beyond fan support for the local soccer team to include participation in a soccer league that includes youth teams from other countries. Activities under the guidance of adults trained in youth development are designed to provide youth an alternative to violent fan activities and other delinquent behaviors. 28 references and an appended contract for a team trip
