Family crisis prevention and response are discussed.
Abstract
The respective roles that the family, the school, and the community play in crisis prevention and response must be complementary and synergistic. This article explores the various elements of an efficient violence preparedness system as revealed by data collected by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing School Violence Advisory Panel. A listing of these elements includes developing a core of volunteer parents, promoting collaborative partnerships between parents and school personnel, understanding basic human needs, appreciating cultural diversity, and recognizing different experiences of oppression and victimization. Families also should work to keep communication lines open with their children, be alert to any signs of posttraumatic stress as a result of acts of violence and unexpected trauma, and create a nurturing, supportive environment. The three primary family environments--the school, home, and immediate neighborhood-- must be defined, and the adults within each of these environments must share responsibility for the protection and nurture of children.
