Directed mainly to health care providers, this manual provides background information about domestic assault and Massachusetts law on the topic and presents guidelines for identifying and addressing the needs of battered women in clinical settings.
Abstract
Individual sections challenge common misconceptions about domestic assault and its clinical consequences and present statistics about the nature and incidence of domestic assault as well as the relationship between domestic assault and alcohol and other drug abuse. Other sections provide guidelines for identifying battered women in clinical settings, reviewing the person's history, interviewing suspected battered women, collecting physical evidence, reporting the incident to the police, assessing the risk and planning for safety, working with populations with special needs, and the psychological impacts on children of battered women.
