RECENT ACTIVITIES BY THE WASHINGTON ASSOCIATION OF SHERIFFS AND POLICE CHIEFS (WASPC), WASHINGTON, REVEAL INVOLVEMENT WITH LEGISLATION, YOUTH, AND LAW ENFORCEMENT STANDARD WRITING FOR CITIES.
Abstract
WITH THE IDEA THAT THE 1980'S MAY SEE A RESHAPING OF POLICE STRUCTURE IN MIND, WASPC DEVELOPED STANDARDS FOR 19 LAW ENFORCEMENT AREAS, FROM INTERNAL DISCIPLINE TO TRAFFIC CONTROL. WASPC THEN HELPED SMALL CITIES WITHOUT THE NECESSARY FUNDS TO IMPLEMENT THESE STANDARDS, AND DEVELOPED PERSONNEL MANUALS FOR THEM. WASPC HAS ALSO HELPED THE FBI FORM A UNIFORM CRIME REPORTS BUREAU WITHIN THE STATE, WHICH WILL AID PUBLIC OFFICIALS AND GOVERNMENT PLANNERS AS WELL AS POLICE. POLICE CHIEFS HAVE BEGUN TO FILE BRIEFS IN APPELLATE COURTS, WITH WASPC HELP; THE COURTS HAVE CONSEQUENTLY RULED IN THEIR FAVOR. WASPC HAS BEEN INVOLVED WITH THE STATE LEGISLATURE IN GATHERING DATA FOR COMMITTEES AND IN WORKING ON LAW ENFORCEMENT BILLS, AND HAS DEVELOPED OUTREACH PROGRAMS FOR FAMILIES AND YOUTH. WASPC CONFERENCES EMPHASIZE EXECUTIVE TRAINING AND MANAGEMENT, AND PROVIDE TRAINING SESSIONS FOR POLICE FAMILIES. IN CONCLUSION, WASPC WORKS WELL AS A TEAM, HAS BEEN FOCUSING ON THE NEEDS OF WASHINGTON CITIZENS, AND HOPES TO ENCOURAGE LAW ENFORCEMENT CONTROL BY LOCAL GOVERNMENT RATHER THAN STATE OR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.
