Abstract
Over the 1986-1990 period, 58 inmates escaped from custody. Ten inmates escaped during calendar year 1990. The majority of escapees (78 percent) were from minimum security facilities or were medium security inmates assigned to work details outside of the security perimeter. In 1990, escapees were most likely to have been incarcerated in prison for the offenses of burglary (30 percent), murder (20 percent), or robbery (20 percent). Escapees were younger when compared to the total inmate population. In contrast to the total inmate population of 19 percent white, 67 percent of the escapees were white. Of the 58 escapees, 28 (47 percent) were caught within 12 hours and 48 (83 percent) within 48 hours of their escape. Four escapees were arrested in 1990 for additional crimes while on escape status. 4 figures, 15 tables, and 2 appendixes
