The latest high-technology tool to aid police agencies in their surveillance and identifications is FaceIt from Visionics Corporation.
Abstract
The product’s broad range of applications for retail, airport, gaming, corporate, and banking security as well as for law enforcement have generated high demand. FaceIt uses an elaborate mathematical system to translate an individual’s identity into a complex formula. The results can be matched and compared to others. FaceIt constantly searches for faces in a data stream as people pass by a camera. It can either return the picture of a single person or generate a list of people who look like the suspect. The software recognizes faces at angles of up to 35 degrees as long as both eyes are visible. In surveillance situations, the technology will identify known suspects and automatically alert police officials once the match is made. The system can discard or retain files. Agencies throughout the world currently use the technology. Photograph
