INTERVIEWS WERE CONDUCTED WITH POLICE OFFICERS IN MENLO PARK (CA), LAKEWOOD (CO), AND WASHINGTON (DC); INFORMATION IS PRESENTED ON THEIR EXPERIENCES WITH AND ATTITUDES TOWARD NON-MILITARY RANK DESIGNATIONS.
Abstract
SOME OF THE MAJOR DIFFICULTIES REPORTED ON THE USE OF NON-MILITARY RANK DESIGNATIONS INCLUDE UNCERTAINTY ABOUT THE CHAIN OF COMMAND, DEMORALIZATION AMONG THE MEN, MANY OF WHOM CONSIDERED THEIR RANKS 'HARD-EARNED', AND CONFUSION WHEN DEALING WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS. SUGGESTIONS WERE RECEIVED FOR THE INCLUSION OF PERFORMANCE-RELATED DESIGNATIONS WITHIN EXISTING RANKS, SUCH AS 'MASTER PATROLMAN' WITHIN THE PATROL OFFICER LEVEL.
