Abstract
ONE REASON FOR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE MAY WELL BE THE AVOIDANCE OF ATTEMPTS TO CONSTRUCT A SOPHISTICATED TYPOLOGY OF DETERRENCE. OTHER PROBLEMS IN DETERRENCE RESEARCH ARE THE EFFECTS OF CRIME DISPLACEMENT OR ESCALATION FOLLOWING THE INTRODUCTION OF DETERRENT MEASURES, AND ETHICAL ISSUES POSED BY DETERRENCE. PREVENTION AND CONTROL TECHNIQUES WHICH MERIT EVALUATION INCLUDE NEIGHBORHOOD SECURITY PROGRAMS, BUILDING SECURITY, LIGHTING PROGRAMS, AIR SURVEILLANCE, AND POLICE PATROL STRATEGIES.
