POLICEMEN WERE COMPARED WITH NON-POLICE PERSONS ON THE BASIS OF THEIR ABILITY TO IDENTIFY INDIVIDUALS WHO APPEARED ON A TEST FLIM.
Abstract
NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES IN OBSERVING ABILITY WERE FOUND BETWEEN YOUNG POLICE, OLD POLICE, AND THE GENERAL DEMOGRAPHIC CATEGORIES OF NON-POLICE PANELISTS. THE ONLY SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT OCCURRED WHEN COLOR FILM WAS USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH COLOR PHOTOGRAPHS AND TWENTY SECOND IDENTIFICATION FILMS. A 44 PERCENT DETECTION RATE RESULTED, COMPARED TO 31 PERCENT WHEN BLACK AND WHITE FILM WAS USED WITH BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS.
