The report provides 63 tables of comprehensive data on spending and personnel levels in designated sectors of criminal justice activity of the federal, state, and local governments in 1978; namely, police protection, judicial, legal services and prosecution, public defense, corrections, and "other criminal justice." expenditure. Data are for the fiscal year 1978, and employment and payroll data are for the month of October 1978. In addition to total spending and personnel levels, the report presents data on direct expenditure, capital outlay, intergovernmental expenditure, employment, and payroll data, by sector, for individual state governments and the aggregate local level of government by type (counties, municipalities) within each state. Expenditure, employment, and payroll detail by sector are also provided for the 17 largest standard metropolitan statistical areas and their component county areas, for 343 individual county governments with a 1976 population of 100,000 or more, and for 406 individual municipal governments (cities and townships) with a population of 50,000 or more. Other tabular presentations include: (1) distribution of sworn and nonsworn police employment and payroll by state and type of government; (2) correctional institution and probation, pardon, and parole expenditure by state and type of government; (3) expenditure and employment data for special police force activities in selected school districts and special districts; and (4) expenditure and employment data for selected campus police forces of state governments. Data analysis and survey methodology are presented in an introductory text and supplemented by a graphic summary of the 1978 data. Definitions of terms and survey forms are appended.
