RESULTS OF A PERSONALITY TEST ADMINISTERED BEFORE AND AFTER A POLICE TRAINING PROGRAM.
Abstract
THE PROJECT EXAMINED WHETHER CERTAIN TRAITS CHANGED OR REMAINED CONSTANT AFTER FOUR WEEKS OF INTERACTION IN A SPECIALLY DESIGNED COURSE, AND WHETHER POLICE EXECUTIVE ATTITUDES, AS MEASURED BY PERSONALITY TRAITS, VARIED SIGNIFICANTLY WHEN TWO CONTROLS WERE IMPOSED. THE STUDY ALSO ATTEMPTED TO DETERMINE WHETHER PREDICTIVE TEST LEVELS, FOR USE WITH RECRUITS AND NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS, CAN BE IDENTIFIED FOR PREDICTING POTENTIAL POLICE EXECUTIVES. RESULTS INDICATE THAT POLICE EXECUTIVES IN THE SAMPLE WERE IDENTIFIED BY THEIR SUPERIORS LARGELY ON THE BASIS OF TWO PERSONALITY TRAITSINITIATIVE AND SELF-RELIANCE.' THE AUTHORS SUGGEST THAT 'LEADERSHIP TRAITS OF POLICE EXECUTIVES, AS DEFINED AND MEASURED BY THE DYNAMIC PERSONALITY INVENTORY, (DPI) CAN BE STRENGTHENED UNDER STRUCTURED POLICE TRAINING CONDITIONS.' APPENDED TABLES INCLUDE STATISTICAL DATA AND DESCRIPTIONS OF SELECTED DPI SCALES. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
