IN THIS ANTHOLOGY, THE EDITORS PRESENT 22 SELECTIONS WHICH GIVE AN OVERVIEW OF THE NATURE OF DEVIANCE AND PROVIDE A SIGNIFICANT SAMPLING OF CURRENT EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON THE MANY FORMS OF SOCIALLY DEVIANT BEHAVIOR.
Abstract
THE GUIDING FRAMEWORK USED IN SELECTING MATERIALS FOR INCLUSION IN THIS TEXT WAS THAT OF THE INTERACTIONISTLABELING PERSPECTIVE ON DEVIANCE. AFTER PROVIDING SEVERAL ARTICLES ON THE NATURE OF DEVIANCE, REPORTS OF EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON DEVIANT BEHAVIOR ARE PRESENTED. THESE ARE ORGANIZED ACCORDING TO THEIR GENERAL METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH: INTERVIEW EXPERIMENTS, QUASI-EXPERIMENTS, LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS, AND FIELD EXPERIMENTS. EDITORS' NOTES ACCOMPANY EACH OF THE STUDIES INCLUDED AND ATTEMPT TO INTERPRET THE REPORTS WITHIN THE INTERACTIONIST-LABELING PERSPECTIVE AND TO INDICATE THEIR OVERALL SIGNIFICANCE FOR STUDYING DEVIANCE. AMONG THE SPECIFIC RESEARCH EFFORTS REPORTED IN THIS VOLUME ARE THE INFLUENCE OF THE CHARACTER OF THE CRIMINAL AND HIS VICTIM ON THE DECISIONS OF SIMULATED JURORS; THE EFFECT IN PHILADELPHIA OF INCREASED PENALTIES FOR RAPE AND ATTEMPTED RAPE; INTERPERSONAL DYNAMICS IN A SIMULATED PRISON; AND A STUDY OF REACTIONS TO SHOPLIFTING.
