SUMMARY OF DATA COLLECTED ON THREE ALABAMA JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES.
Abstract
THE DOCUMENT BEGINS WITH A PROGRAM DESCRIPTION OF THE ALABAMA BOYS INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL, THE ALABAMA INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL, AND THE STATE TRAINING SCHOOL FOR GIRLS. DATA WERE COLLECTED ON EACH INSTITUTION, WITH THE MAIN COLLECTION DEVICES BEING THE STAFF AND YOUTH QUESTIONNAIRES. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT ALL THREE SCHOOLS ARE LOW-SURVEILLANCE INSTITUTIONS ORIENTED TOWARD GOALS OF PROVIDING SOME MEANINGFUL TREATMENT, PARTICULARLY IN THE AREAS OF TRAINING AND SOCIAL AWARENESS. THERE WAS ALSO SHOWN TO BE A GREAT DEAL OF SIMILARITY BETWEEN THE SCHOOLS IN THE GENERAL DIRECTION OF DESIRED PROGRAM CHANGES.
