THIS PROGRAM PROPOSED TO PROVIDE SHORT-TERM TREATMENT FOR CLIENTS IDENTIFIED AS DRUG ADDICTS OR ALCOHOLICS AND TO REFER INTO CIVILIAN TREATMENT PROGRAMS CLIENTS WHO WERE TREATED IN THE PRISON PROGRAM.
Abstract
IN SPITE OF STAFFING PROBLEMS WHICH LEFT THE PROGRAM AT LESS THAN FULL STRENGTH, A HIGH CLINICAL CONCENTRATION WAS STILL PROVIDED - 185-190 INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING SESSIONS, 35 GROUP SESSIONS, AND 10 ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS SESSIONS PER MONTH. AN AVERAGE OF OVER 60 CLIENTS WERE HANDLED IN THE PRISON TREATMENT PROGRAM AND 102 REFERALS WERE MADE TO COMMUNITY TREATMENT PROGRAMS DURING THE YEAR. THE 102 REFERRALS PRODUCED A 17 PERCENT RECIDIVIST RATE, WITH 15 RE-ARRESTS AND 3 TECHNICAL PAROLE VIOLATIONS. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE PROGRAM DEVELOP AN IN-HOUSE DATA GATHERING AND ANALYSIS CAPABILITY, OPERATE AT A CEILING LEVEL OF 50 INMATES IN TREATMENT AT ANY ONE TIME, ESTABLISH A CLIENT CONTROL GROUP FOR COMPARISON PURPOSES, AND TRACK CLIENTS REFERRED TO TREATMENT PRORAMS....ELW
