This is an overview of the South Carolina Residential Substance Abuse Treatment (RSAT) Program for State Prisoners.
Abstract
The South Carolina RSAT program is known as the Correctional Recovery Academy (CRA), operated by Civigenics, Inc., under contract with the South Carolina Department of Corrections. The CRA is a modified therapeutic community, using a cognitive behavioral approach with a projected length of stay between 8 and 12 months depending on client performance. It is designed to provide multi-modal substance abuse treatment in a residential setting for 17- to 27-year-old males sentenced under the Youthful Offender Act to an indeterminate sentence. The primary treatment methodologies used by the CRA include: (1) cognitive re-structuring towards pro-social, pro-deliberative norms; (2) cognitive-behavioral training toward relapse prevention and social reintegration; (3) social learning mechanisms of therapeutic communities; and (4) the spiritual community of a 12-steps fellowship.
