A SERIES OF PAPERS COMMISSIONED BY THE UNITED NATIONS SOCIAL DEFENSE RESEARCH INSTITUTE, AND A SUMMARY SECRETARIAT REPORT ON THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE CONFERENCE.
Abstract
CONTRIBUTORS REPRESENTED AN INTERNATIONAL CROSS SECTION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACADEMICIANS AND PRACTITIONERS. TOPICS INCLUDED QUANTIFICATION IN EVALUATIVE RESEARCH, RESEARCH WITH AND WITHOUT HARD DATA, CROSS-INSTITUTIONAL DESIGNS, AND THE IMPACT OF SUCH RESEARCH ON DECISION MAKING. PARTICIPANTS ARE SAID TO HAVE AGREED THAT ISSUES REGARDING THE DATA BASE, METHODOLOGY, COST, AND IMPACT OF EVALUATIVE RESEARCH CAN NOT, IN PRACTICE, BE EASILY SEPARATED. IT WAS ALSO AGREED THAT EVALUATION SHOULD RELY ON RELATIVELY SIMPLE RESEARCH METHODS, AND THAT SUCH RESEARCH IS ONLY AS EFFECTIVE AS ITS IMPACT ON DECISION MAKERS AT THE POLICY OR OPERATIONAL LEVEL.
