EVALUATION OF SIX JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS WHOSE PRIMARY GOAL IS CHANGING YOUTH'S PERSONALITY AND VALUES SO THAT THESE YOUTH CAN PARTICIPATE EFFECTIVELY IN THE LARGE SOCIETY.
Abstract
THE MAJOR OBJECTIVES OF THIS STUDY ARE TO EXAMINE THE CONSEQUENCES OF DIFFERENT CORRECTIONAL GOALS REGARDING ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE, STAFF PERSPECTIVES AND BEHAVIOR TOWARD THE INMATES, AND INMATES' BEHAVIOR. AN ANALYSIS OF BROAD SETS OF BELIEFS (INCARCERATION AND DEPRIVATION, AUTHORITY AND OBEDIENCE, LEARNING, SOCIALIZATION, AND THERAPY) DEFINED THREE MAJOR ORGANIZATIONAL MODELS RANGED ALONG THE CUSTODY-TREATMENT CONTINUUM. TWO ORGANIZATIONS WERE SELECTED TO REPRESENT EACH MODEL. THE RESEARCH WAS COMPARATIVE AND TO SOME EXTENT LONGITUDINAL. THE ORGANIZATIONS REPRESENTING THE CUSTODIAL AND TREATMENT MODELS WERE STUDIED AT TWO POINTS IN TIME. DATA WERE GATHERED FROM TOP ADMINISTRATORS, THE RANK AND FILE, AND THE CLIENTS. DATA GATHERING TECHNIQUES INCLUDED INTERVIEWS OF KEY PERSONS IN THE ORGANIZATIONS, QUESTIONNAIRES TO ALL PERSONNEL AND CLIENTS, AND OBSERVATION OF EARLY ACTIVITIES OF EACH INSTITUTION INVOLVED IN THE STUDY. FOLLOWING A SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK, A CRITIQUE OF THE STUDY IS PRESENTED WITH COMMENTS ON THE CONCEPTUAL MODEL, THE RESEARCH DESIGN, QUESTIONNAIRE CONSTRUCTION, RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY, AND DATA COLLECTION.
