THEORETICAL APPROACH TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF SOCIOLOGICAL FACTORS RELATING TO CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR AND OFFENDER REHABILITATION.
Abstract
THE TWO CRITERIA WHICH GUIDED THE SELECTION OF RESEARCH STUDIES REVIEWED IN THIS ARTICLE, ARE POLICY RELEVANCE AND EMPLOYMENT AS A METHOD OF REHABILITATION. 'IN GENERAL, THE PREVIOUS RESEARCH SUPPORTS THE CONTENTION THAT TRAINING IS LIKELY TO INCREASE THE CHANCES FOR SUCCESS, BOTH IN TERMS OF REGULAR EMPLOYMENT AND LOWER RECIDIVISM. PROGRAMS SHOULD TRAIN FOR PROPER WORK ATTITUDES AND HABITS, AS WELL AS SKILLS RELEVANT IN THE JOB MARKET. FOLLOW UP SUPPORT AFTER RELEASE IS ALSO EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.' OTHER TOPICS COVERED ARE MANPOWER DEVELOPMENT TRAINING ACT PROGRAMS, STRESSING THE EFFECTS OF RETRAINING, COUNSELING, AND SOCIAL SUPPORT FOR THE INMATE AND EX-OFFENDER. SEE NCJRS 08944 AND 08945 FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON MDTA TRAINING IN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS. (AUTHOR MODIFIED)
