This article presents outcomes on 163 persons admitted to a residential probation facility in Kalamazoo (Michigan) over a 3-year period, the Kalamazoo Probation Enhancement Program (KPEP).
Abstract
Only one-third (31.90 percent) of the 163 probationers admitted to KPEP received successful discharges from the program. Over half (59.51 percent) of the probationers received unsuccessful discharges and 8.95 percent were given general discharges. Successful completions of employment skills classes, job club activity, and life skills classes, in addition to employment while in the program, were with few exceptions prerequisites for successful discharge from KPEP. Fulfilling these requirements did not ensure successful discharge. Older age, higher educational attainment, and the absence of a juvenile record were predictive of inprogram success. Younger age and successful discharge from KPEP were the only variables predictive of lower postprogram recidivism. 9 notes and 32 references
