ANALYSIS OF DATA ON THE 122 JUVENILES FURLOUGHED FROM THE LANCASTER YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CENTER IN FLORIDA DURING 1972 AND 1973.
Abstract
THE TWO PRINCIPLE VARIABLES CONSIDERED IN THIS STUDY ARE AVERAGE LENGTH OF STAY AND POST-FURLOUGH SUCCESS. EACH WAS ANALYZED AS A FUNCTION OF SEX, RACE, AGE, OFFENSE, NUMBER OF PRIOR COMMITMENTS, AND RELEASE YEAR. THE ANALYSIS USING AVERAGE LENGTH OF STAY (ALS) AS THE DEPENDENT VARIABLE RESULTED IN A SIGNIFICANT RELATIONSHIP WITH ONLY ONE INDEPENDENT VARIABLE - SEX. IT WAS FOUND THAT MALES WERE MORE LIKELY TO HAVE A SHORTER ALS THAN FEMALES. IT WAS ALSO FOUND THAT 1973 RELEASES HAD A MUCH LOWER RECIDIVISM RATE THAN 1972 RELEASES AND THAT FEMALES RELEASED IN 1973 HAD A HIGHER SUCCESS RATE THAN THOSE RELEASED IN 1972. THESE FINDINGS WERE ATTRIBUTED TO THE SHORTER FOLLOW-UP PERIOD AND INCREASED PROPORTION OF FEMALE RELEASEES FOR 1973...EB
