This report describes a study to evaluate the impacts of the Experience Corps program on students receiving the service and older adults providing the service.

Abstract

This report from an evaluation of the Experience Corps (EC) program, which brings adults ages 55 and older into public elementary schools to tutor and mentor children who are at risk of academic failure. The study measured reading outcomes for the students across two school years, 2006-07 and 2007-08. The report provides a detailed history and description of the EC program; the study methodology, including design, sample, data collection, measures, sample attrition, and data analysis, a description of findings; and tables. Findings indicated that the EC program had statistically significant and substantively important effects on reading outcomes; the program successfully delivered intervention to a large number of students; the children being referred to EC were correctly identified for the program and were in need of reading assistance; and the authors also noted that one-quarter of the students referred to the program had English as their second language and 14 percent were special education students.
