PROGRAM OF FORMAL PRE- AND PARA-PROFESSIONAL TRAINING OF PERSONNEL FOR COMMUNITY-BASED CORRECTIONAL WORK.
Abstract
TRAINING IN THIE PROGRAM INCLUDED BOTH ON-THE-JOB TRAINING IN A COMMUNITY CORRECTIONAL CENTER AND CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION ON ALL ASPECTS OF CORRECTIONAL WORK INCLUDING INTERVIEWING, COUNSELING, REPORT WRITING, SPECIAL PROBLEMS OF THE CLIENTS, AND USE OF COMMUNITY RESOURCES. THE PROGRAM WAS EVALUATED ACCORDING TO ITS ABILITY TO RECRUIT AND TRAIN QUALIFIED TRAINEES. THE ATTITUDES AND OPINIONS OF A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT POPULATIONS - THE CASE AIDE GRADUATES, THE CURRENT CASE AIDE TRAINEES, THE EMPLOYERS OF THE CASE AND GRADUATES, AND THE CURRENT RESIDENTS OF ALVIS HOUSE - WERE EXAMINED AND ANALYZED. SEPARATE QUESTIONNAIRES WERE DEVELOPED FOR EACH POPULATION GROUP. RESULTS OF THE PROGRAM EVALUATION INDICATED A HIGH LEVEL OF QUALITY IN BOTH THE PROGRAM AND ITS GRADUATES. EVALUATORS RECOMMENDED THAT MORE EMPHASIS BE GIVEN TO RESEARCH AND EVALUATION AND SUPERVISION AND THAT THE 12-MONTH TRAINING PERIOD FOR PARAPROFESSIONALS BE SHORTENED SO THAT THE PROGRAM WOULD BE ABLE TO BENEFIT MORE TRAINEES. ALSO SUGGESTED WAS AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF PARA-PROFESSIONAL TRAINEES AS COMPARED TO THE NUMBER OF PRE-PROFESSIONAL COLLEGE GRADUATES. COPIES OF THE EVALUATION QUESTIONNAIRES APPEAR IN THE APPENDIX. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
