POLICE FRATERNALISM, EPITOMIZED BY THE SLOGAN, 'ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL', DOES NOT CARRY OVER INTO THE AREA OF INFORMATION SHARING BETWEEN POLICE AGENCIES, DIVISIONS WITHIN AGENCIES, OR INDIVIDUAL OFFICERS.
Abstract
IN THIS RESPECT THE DEVELOPMENT OF POLICE ESPRIT DE CORPS INTERFERES WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF POLICE PROFESSIONALISM, ALTHOUGH NOT WITH THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF POLICEMEN. WHILE INFORMATION HOARDING (ESPECIALLY THE TYPE OF INFORMATION GLEANED FROM INFORMANTS) MAY BENEFIT INDIVIDUAL OFFICERS, IT WOULD CERTAINLY AID HIS POLICE DEPARTMENT IN MORE EFFECTIVE POLICY PLANNING AND LAW ENFORCEMENT.
