This manual provides an overview of the concept of crime prevention through environmental design and is intended for use by crime prevention planners, law enforcement personnel, security practitioners, and urban developers and builders.
Abstract
Environmental security planning is described as a comprehensive process that brings together crime prevention, neighborhood or community design, and urban development. An overview presents a history of environmental security and lists of the physical and social factors that affect crime prevention planning in urban areas. Sixteen principles are listed for use in planning transportation routes, school districts, and other components of a development. A checklist is presented for assessing the design of a development or a building. Checklists and outlines for business security focus on burglary and robbery prevention, deterrence of shoplifting, precautions related to forged checks, vandalism prevention, perimeter security, lighting, access control, and employee screening and education. Guidelines on residential security cover neighborhood watch, home security inspections, physical security measures, and vacation protection.
