Abstract
Research undertaken in 1997 by the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) Information Center was aimed at pulling information together on factors that may have bearing on the performance of correctional tasks in the near future. This information was to provide the NIC management with information in program planning. Corrections and criminal justice literature were reviewed. Research was conducted and findings were grouped into three main sections: corrections in society, correctional management and operations, and special issues in corrections. Information highlighted in the report included: crime rates, crime victims, media coverage/public opinion, legislation, criminal findings and case processing; corrections funding, prison management and operations, jail management and operations, community corrections management and operations, juvenile justice, legal issues, correctional health care, privatization, racial issues, female offenders, and offender treatment and management.
